Australian Under 21 Champion for another year!
I am so excited to have retained my Australian Under 21 Title which I did on 25 January, 2014 and I’m proud to have joined an impressive list of 6 riders who have previously won this title on at least two occasions throughout its 25 stagings.
This was the meeting that I really wanted to win over the summer in Australia and I knew that it was going to be really difficult because of the calibre of riders that were also chasing the title. Although I really wanted to do well, realistically, I would have been happy just to make the final. Amongst the 16 starters, there were at least 7-8 who had the potential to win.
In the end it came down to consistency. I had performed well throughout the night, winning three heats and getting second place in the other two races. Nick Morris went into the final on the maximum of 15 points after winning all his heats. I went through next on 13 points, followed by Ryan Douglas on 12 and Jack Holder who transferred through after winning the B final.
It was still wide open as any one of us could have won the final but Nick was the obvious favourite. It was another very exciting race. Nick’s starts had been fantastic all night and this was no exception. He got the jump from the gate but went wide looking for the dirt on the outside of the first turn which allowed me to cut back and take the lead which I held for two laps. Nick and I raced close for a thrilling race and he managed to get passed briefly on the third lap coming into turn 3 before I again passed Nick coming off turn 4 and I held the race lead to the finish line. Unfortunately for Nick, he found heaps of drive coming off the last corner whilst running second and flipped his bike falling off 20 metres from the finish line and this allowed Ryan and Jack to take second and third.
It was a great night’s racing and I’m rapt be once again be the Under 21 Australian Speedway Champion.
