Australian Under 21 Solo Speedway Title 2013

Very exciting night for me!

On 19 January we headed to Kurri Kurri to contest the Under 21 Australian Title. 12  riders (including me) were seeded straight into the final and a qualifying round had to be run in the afternoon to determine who would fill the last 4 spots in the final to be run that night in conjunction with the Under 16 350cc title.

With both titles being contested there was a full card of 40 heats to be run and the Kurri Kurri Speedway Club did an amazing job running a clean, fast meeting on a really well prepared track that stood up to the intermittent rain throughout the night.

I had a really good night and after getting a third, a second and finishing off with firsts in my final three heats, I ended up on a score of 12 points together with Justin Sedgeman with Tyler Poole top scoring on 13 points.  This put me straight into the A final and I was stoked to be going straight through considering the high level of competition on the night.   After a hard fought B final the last spot was filled by Alex Davies.

My start wasn’t great and I approached the first corner in 4th position but managed to get past Alex by the second corner and set off chasing Tyler and Justin who had already opened up a gap.  I managed to pull them back a bit and looked for an opportunity to pass.  At the end of the third lap, they went wide into the dirt on the fourth corner and I passed through on the inside and managed to hold onto the lead for the final lap taking the win ahead of Tyler Poole in 2nd, Justin Sedgeman, 3rd and Alex Davies 4th.

This event was never one that I considered that I might win which makes it even more special and I’m stoked to be the new Under 21 Australian Champion for 2013.
